: Word of the Day : Persevere

I never knew the true definition of the word until this morning. It means to remain constant to a purpose, idea, or task in the face of obstacles or discouragements.

There are a few verses I can recall that use the term persevere (one in Hebrews, one in James although I am sure there are many more).

As the sun rises this morning, I think, "There will be obstacles and probably some discouragements, maybe minor or major. However, this morning I am being convicted to persevere." Thinking about what early Christians had to face when these texts were written, they must have been a difficult read. Alas, they remained faithful and persevered through horrible situations because they remained constant to the cause and idea.

Many may think, "Why should I persevere through all of life's obstacles and disappointments?" When those kind of doubts creep into my mind, I try to remember the small glimpses of eternity and blessings I see everyday. I look for things that bring me a little joy, a little love, a little comfort. For these are all things He has promised and gifted to us. If He is faithful in the small things how much more will He be faithful in the big things - giving us hope and assurance of unimaginable things to come.

As my grandpa is now ill and doesn't have much time to spend here on this earth, I will cherish the words he speaks at the end of every prayer "...keep us faithful until you come again." In my book, remaining faithful and persevering go hand in hand. Don't give up. For the small glimpses of hope we encounter now will only someday become a most spectacular
reality.
